John Deere E Series Launched
There had been much hype and excitement in timber harvesting circles in advance of the launch of John Deere's new E Series. However, I think it's fair to say there was more expectation and talk amongst machine operators in this country, as opposed to owners, due to the challenging market conditions here. No one we contacted within John Deere was giving anything away with regard to what new models or changes to expect. Certainly, all of the secrecy did add to the talk and conjecture regarding what features we might expect from the John Deere designers. Finally, on Wednesday May 28th, John Deere Forestry introduced the new E-series with the unveiling of three machines: the 1270E and 1470E harvesters and the1510E forwarder. At the same time, the company also unveiled the H414 harvesting head, which has been designed for the 1170E (to become available later this year). The rest of the new E-series model range, including the 1070E harvester and the 810E, 1010E, 1110E, 1210E and 1910E forwarders will be introduced at various times throughout this year and in 2009.

Harvesting Contractors on Prote...
On April 30th a protest relating to timber harvesting issues took place outside Coillte's headquarters in Newtownmountkennedy, Co. Wicklow. A current contractor Michael Cronin and former contractor, Ger Donovan, who took part in the protest, believe that Coillte, through its management practices has been responsible for the failure of an unknown number of contracting business while at the same time placing many others in jeopardy.Ger Donovan has been working in forestry for twenty two years. His contracting business got into difficulty because he was unable to meet repayments on borrowed money he invested in harvesting machines..
He believes Coillte is responsible for his business difficulties. "We were harvesting forests for Coillte and the paperwork determined the rate and the same paperwork bore little relation to what was in the forests. I got an independent man to measure the work that I had done and I was subsequently put out of business."

Coillte Profits Jump to €40 M...
Coillte has published impressive results for 2007 showing a substantial increase in profits from €22.5m in 2006 to over €40m last year. Coillte has announced its profits for 2007 were up almost 80% on 2006 to an impressive €40.1 million. The main drivers of this strong performance were high log and wood panel prices and strong customer demand, which resulted in strong performances by the Forest and Panel Products divisions.
During 2007 Coillte recorded turnover of €318 million, up almost 50% on 2006. Exports accounted for 54% of sales, establishing the Coillte Group as an international forestry and forest products business. The largest export market was the UK with Medite MDF and SmartPly OSB panel products generating the bulk of sales there. The year also saw log sales break the €100 million mark for the first time at €106 million. - For the full story, see the current issue of IT&F magazine!
